Description: Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling
Very nice Class II doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, increasing from left to right.  Doubling also shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the right side of the building.  There is some tripling on CENTS and AMERICA.

Markers: 

  • Obv:  None noted.
  • Rev:  Slanted die scratch to lower right of S of CENTS; series of slanted die scratches through first U of UNUM; slanted die scratch above second T of STATES.

  • Rev:  Short die gouge between lower portions of L and first U of PLURIBUS.

Description: Class VI, Distended Hub Doubling
Extra thickness (at least three hubbings) shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, and the MO and ELLO of MONTICELLO.

Markers: 

  • Obv:  Stage A:  Die crack through uppermost hair at top of Jefferson's head.
    Stage B:  Die crack through Jefferson's upper hair; die scratch south from below his chin.
  • Rev:  Small mint mark variety.  Short die gouge west from upper right of N of UNITED; long die scratches NNE from top of mint mark; die scratch through left arch.

A nice CW spread shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, STATES OF AMERICA and the right side of the building with extremely close doubling showing on CENTS and LLO of MONTICELLO.
