Description: Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling
A constant spread toward the center shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM.  A close spread shows on OF AMERICA, where it increases from left to right.  A close spread shows very slightly on the second O of MONTICELLO and the lower right side of the building.  Stage B doubling is same as Stage A, but weaker from polishing.

  • Obv:  Stage A:  Short vertical die gouge between R and T of LIBERTY; die scratch near rim above WE; die scratch from rim over E of WE to first T of TRUST.
    Stage B:  All Stage A markers polished off.  Short vertical die gouge to right of upper portion of second T of TRUST; die gouge (dot) between upper portions of 1 and 9 of date.

1957 WDDR-002 Proof

Description: Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling
A spread toward the center shows on PLURIBUS UNUM, STATES OF AMERICA, CENTS, LLO of MONTICELLO and the right side of the building with all spreads increasing from left to right.  The lower serifs of UNUM show tripling.  

Markers: 

  • Obv:  Stage A:  Numerous die scratches from rim between IN and coat; numerous die scratches on coat lapel; numerous diagonal die scratches on lower right of coat.
    Stage B:  Die scratches between IN and coat are gone; die scratches on coat are very weak or missing.
  • Rev:  Stage A:  Die gouge (dot) inside lower portion of second U of PLURIBUS; die gouge (dot) to left of upper portion of first U of UNUM; die gouge (dot) to right of lower portion of T of UNITED.
    Stage B:  All reverse Stage A markers are still visible; two die gouges to right of M of UNUM; short die gouge inside lower curve of first S of STATES.
