A nice Class II spread shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing from left to right.  Doubling also shows on CENTS and the right side of the building.  Extra thickness shows on LLO of MONTICELLO.

1942 WDDO-001 "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties

Description: Class IV, Offset Hub Doubling     "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties
Strong doubling shows on IN GOD WE TRUST, LIBERTY, the star, the date, Jefferson’s chin, the underside of the nose and lips, and some hair over his ear.  The doubling is from an offset hubbing with the later (stronger) image spread to the north on all the affected design.

Markers: 

  • Obv:  Die dot east of Jefferson's eye just before his hairline.  The early die state is sharp and clear.  Later die state specimens exist which were heavily polished giving a mushy appearance to the surface and doubling.
  • Rev:  None noted.

Description: Class IV, Offset Hub Doubling     "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties
A strong spread to the south shows on IN GOD WE TRUST,  Jefferson’s profile - especially the nose, LIBERTY, the star and the date.  The spread was on an early hubbing as doubling does not extend to the rim on most letters around the rim.

  • Obv:  Short diagonal die gouge at top of Jefferson's eyebrow north of front of his eye; die scratch in field between U of TRUST and Jefferson's eyebrow; die scratch from top of G of GOD to rim.
