Description: Class II + VI, Distorted and Distended Hub Doubling     "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties
This variety is a quintupled die.  Five distinct images can be seen on the lower portion of I of IN.  Strong extra thickness and some separation of images show on IN GOD WE TRUST where it decreases from left to right, Jefferson’s profile and, to a lesser extent, on LIBERTY, the star, the date and Jefferson’s queue.

This variety is actually a tripled die.  An extremely strong spread toward the center shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM where the spread is constant.  Strong doubling also shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIVE CENTS, MONTICELLO and both sides of the building.  These spreads increase from left to right.  Close tripling is seen on the lower portions of UNUM and UNITED.

  • Obv:  Vertical die scratch on front portion of Jefferson's collar. 
  • Rev:  Die scratch from M of MONTICELLO to T of UNITED; die scratch to right of long right window.

Class II doubling shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND FIVE CENTS, increasing from left to right.  A closer spread shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, decreasing from left to right.  Doubling also shows on LLO of MONTICELLO.

  • Obv:  Die dot in Jefferson's hair to right of forehead. 
  • Rev:  Die dot to left of fourth column.

  • Rev:  Series of heavy slanted die scratches in and between small and long left windows; die gouge below large center semicircular window.
