Description: Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling
Class II doubling shows on LIBERTY, the star and the date.

Markers: 

  • Obv:  Two die scratches between R and T of LIBERTY; die scratch inside lower portion of B of LIBERTY.
  • Rev:  Long die scratch below LO of MONTICELLO; slanted die scratches inside large semicircular window.

Description: Class VIII, Tilted Hub Doubling
Class VIII Tilted Hub doubling shows just below the lower right portion of the steps.

Markers: 

  • Obv:  Die scratch extending from the lower left portion of I of IN.
  • Rev:  Die gouge in lower portion of left arch; die scratch between the second L and O of MONTICELLO.

Description: Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling
Close Class II doubling shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, and FIVE CENTS, increasing from left to right.

Markers: 

  • Obv:  Die scratch between upper portion of D of GOD and W of WE; die gouge in field above Jefferson's head at 11:00.
  • Rev:  Die gouges between F of OF and A of AMERICA; strong die gouge to upper left of dome.

Description: Class II, Distorted Hub Doubling
A close Class II spread shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, increasing from left to right.  It shows very nice on AMERICA.  A close tripled spread shows on UNUM.  A very close spread shows on CENTS and the second O of MONTICELLO.

Markers: 

  • Obv:  None noted.
  • Rev:  Die dot under E of MONTICELLO; circular die scratch around rim shows best under AMERICA; series of short slanted die gouges in both left and right arches; curving die gouge in center of C of CENTS.

A very strong Class VIII spread shows as a portion of the left side of the steps above NT of MONTICELLO.

A very strong Class II + Class VI spread toward the center shows on LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, the star and the date.

  • Rev:  Two slanted die scratches on dome; slanted die scratch on each side of the left small window; die dot between T and I of MONTICELLO.

A strong spread toward the center shows on E PLURIBUS UNUM.  A lesser spread shows on UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, CENTS, ELLO and the right side of the building.  All spreads increase from left to right.

  • Rev:  Die scratch NE from upper left of V of FIVE; short die scratch ENE to right of large semicircle above two center columns.
